The Ending of an Invitation

When snow has had its visit

Comes the threatening rain,

When tonight’s invitation has expired,

  So it rises—it must—alone and warm.

When the stars run off

there you are, left

in the slip between day and night;

  When snow has had its visit,

Comes the drizzling rain.

When another night escapes with the stars,

We rise and we must ––

alone and warm.
