Hi, I’m Jade

I am currently a senior undergraduate at UMass Amherst studying English with the goal of pursuing law.

My writing journey started with yearning for something valuable I knew my physics, chemistry, math, or anatomy classes wouldn’t fulfill: the understanding of empathy, storytelling, and the backbone of what connects humans to each other. But also, the skill, tactic, and behind-thinking of a written craft that helps further understand us and our communities in relation to each other. So, I made the leap and declared English as my major sophomore year, and I haven’t looked back.

I've developed a passion for using writing as a creative technique to translate humanities study readings into narrative storytelling. Creative nonfiction has its own way of efficiently teaching people, just like an academic research paper. My writing style is inspired by Cathy Park Hong's Minor Feelings and Julia Lee's Biting the Hand: Growing Up Asian in a Black and White America.

Writing non-fiction creatively continuously challenges me to push beyond my limits. I believe that writing an effective piece requires an equal blend of creativity and technicality, like constantly asking myself questions: “How does this sentence impact the reader?” and “What does it contribute to the overall message?” Even minor adjustments, such as changing the placement of a sentence, can significantly alter the message or argument of my work. This process excites me, but the art of connecting with my audience is what's rewarding.

As my writing evolved, a strong desire to pursue law emerged. While combining my storytelling skills with my passion in activism, I aspire to help people, particularly marginalized people, in order to bring justice and unity amongst us all.

In my free time, I enjoy doing yoga, ceramics, photography, and reading or writing poetry.
